Who We Are

Roost is a seasonal turkey hunting variety show

We cover it all: conservation, cooking, culture, tactics, and gear. We go hard, hunt our assess off, and do it out West. We launch each February and run content during the season through June. Spring is our time. Four years and counting.

Ben O’Brien

From: Maryland, lives in Montana
Loves: Debating ethics, post-hunt cocktails, fried turkey, purrs
Hates: Peas, cilantro, early fly-downs, plucking whole birds

The consummate observer and host. The journalist who prods and asks the right questions. Ben’s always been willing to challenge the status quo. That said, the dude also just loves to turkey hunt. His “no experts” mentality keeps the crew humble and helps them avoid the common trope of throwing out tips and tactics before authority is earned.

Sam Soholt

From South Dakota, lives in North Dakota
Loves: Fresh latex, calm mornings, heart-rattling gobbles.
Hates: Putts, lack of caffeine, wet slate calls, dry diaphragms

Sam’s the big idea guy. Turkey conservation’s best marketing hope. Born and bred in South Dakota, Sam has all the love for the outdoors that you could want, plus he’s got that affable midwest demeanor. You literally can’t hate him. We’ve tried. He’s devoted himself to raising awareness for turkeys.

We’re living out West

Every Spring, we set out on a  turkey tour out West. We hit a public land run that is always full of short nights, distant gobbles, post-holing through snow, getting sunburnt, misses, hits, and a list of hunting lessons a mile long. And we film it all, producing podcasts and videos at every stop. Sweet Jesus, it already feels like we’re going to need an energy drink sponsor.

A lot of public ground camping, sleeping in trucks and gas station burritos.

We’re here for the bird

At the heart of it all, though, we share something important with every dedicated turkey hunter: We’re here for the bird. That means treating the wild turkey as a resource we must cherish and understanding that hunting them comes with responsibilities. It means building something for the next generation that they can own. A new way that doesn’t forget the old way.
